Learning Styles in Action

Each learning style has unique characteristics.
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?

Brenda puts everything in outline or categorized format.
Preferred learning style: Analyzer
For someone like Brenda, everything has its place until proven otherwise. She loves to categorize facts and organize them into rational outlines. Once they're in this form, she can easily memorize them.

David always wants to study or do homework with others.
Preferred learning styles: Synthesizer, Interactor
David enjoys the process of discussing and relating the material, while other styles prefer to get the information and move on. In most situations, he succeeds by talking to and networking with others.

Karen craves personal anecdotes, related stories and visuals.
Preferred learning styles: Synthesizer, Interactor
Karen thrives on teachers who provide constant visual and auditory examples such as personal anecdotes or directed stories that weave facts and theories into an understandable whole, one that is so compelling that she rarely forgets or misunderstands.

Susan waits until the last minute to complete projects.
Preferred learning style: Analyzer
Susan procrastinates. On written assignments, however, she produces her best work. She's learned that waiting until the last minute saves her from rewrites later, when she discovers a better idea or solution.

Sophie becomes frustrated when her teacher
wanders off the class topic.

Preferred learning style: Analyzer
Sophie has no patience with teachers who are disorganized or too anecdotal. She has learned, however, to use patience rather than intellectual arrogance when "creative teachers" wander off the topic or become too personal with their presentations.

Barbara finds it difficult to sit down and study all at once.
Preferred learning style: Synthesizer
Barbara's mind wanders as it constantly explores new ways to look at a problem. At such times, it is best for her to take the time to explore other thoughts before proceeding. She will return refreshed and inspired. Short study intervals over an extended period of time work best for her.

Carlos prefers no-nonsense, pragmatic and goal-oriented teachers.
Preferred learning style: Concluder
Carlos strives to meet his objectives quickly and successfully. Teachers who "wander" prevent him from rapidly achieving success

Douglas dreads going to some teachers' classes.
People prefer a teacher whose style is similar to their own, just as they prefer other people with similar communication styles. Douglas can reduce the likelihood of being frustrated by a teacher's style if he finds out what that style is before signing up for a class.

Bonnie includes many visuals and colors in her notes.
Preferred learning styles: Synthesizer, Interactor
Bonnie uses diagrams and visuals to reinforce what she has heard in class. This helps her to memorize and keep the information in a sequential order, showing where everything fits into the whole. Using a variety of colors allows her to differentiate complete thoughts and to make prominent the most important ideas and facts.

Leo is a high achiever and always needs to be No. 1.
Preferred learning style: Concluder
Leo works hard at keeping his edge, no matter how long or how much effort it takes. He is usually the first to raise his hand in class when a question is asked. He constantly needs to know where he stands in relation to other students in the class.

Malcolm finds gaps in his notes after class.
Preferred learning style: Synthesizer
Malcolm gets caught up in an idea or personal assumption and forgets to write down the facts within a coherent whole thought. Tape-recording classes will provide him with an opportunity to fill in the gaps after class.
